Greenland Dogs at Eigergletscher
The world’s highest-altitude Greenland-dog breeding kennel has been located at Eigergletscher close to the famous Eiger North Wall since 1912.
The Eigergletscher station can be reached from Kleine Scheidegg by a short seven-minute ride on the Jungfrau Railway.
In earlier days the Greenland dogs were used mainly for transporting provisions and mail for the men employed on construction of the Jungfrau Railway. Today, the dogs are harnessed in a team to provide sledge rides for summer tourists on the Jungfraujoch, weather permitting.
Around 25 dogs are looked after around the clock by three employees working in shifts. The climatic conditions at Eigergletscher, altitude 2320 metres, are ideal for the dogs.
The entire kennel complex and all the Greenland dogs are owned by the Jungfrau Railway in Interlaken. The company bears all relevant costs and provides the funds and material needed for the upkeep of the colony.
The polar dog colony at Eigergletscher is open for visits during the summer months with prior telephone reservation.
